A Day at the Tallahassee Museum
Thanks to my friend Lisa for sharing this nifty little thing with us! Today was Museum Day sponsored by Smithsonian Magazine in which you could go to a participating museum for free! We had just a couple choices here in town, but opted for the Tallahassee Museum which is a small little affair housing some animals and some old Florida history (school house, home, etc.). We'd been there before but not since Maddy was much younger.
Oh, and the little leaf necklace Maddy is wearing is something she made at daycare earlier in the week as a part of their "Welcome Fall" activities. She's just insisted on wearing it 24/7 since. :)
We were checking out the otter (he didn't make it into a picture).

Taking a second (literally) to sit with daddy
And a super quick second with mommy.
We brought two strollers, but hers sat empty for most of the day :) We left the large double stroller behind because it doesn't push well through sand. A good portion of the Museum is boardwalk, but not all.

She stopped to sit on every bench for about 2 seconds
She thought this display was fun. She kept flipping the things up.
Such a serious face! He's finally starting to get the idea of sippy cups. I was so glad that he was willing to try given how warm it was out...gotta keep him hydrated! :)
We stopped and ate a snack before hitting the little playground they have. We stink at getting family photos...should have thought to have someone snap one for us while eating!
Maddy was all about the swings...she spent a good half hour doing nothing but swinging (well, being pushed :) still working on the whole leg-pumping thing).
Thankfully, daddy took over the pushing after Tommy had finished his food. It was HOT!

We stopped at Steak and Shake for lunch on the way home (kids eat free all weekend!). This was the second time we'd gone, so Maddy made sure to don her hat once again. She loves it.

This was the first time we asked for TWO highchairs while eating out versus just having Tommy hang in the car seat. Lunch went surprisingly well with the both of them. THANK YOU, LORD!
We had a fun weekend out! Now to face another busy week of work and school and everything else. I'm off to bed! :)
More Interviews!
This week brought 3 more interview locations! Lance will be flying to Milwaukee, WI. The two of us will be driving to Jacksonville, FL and Little Rock, AR. Dates for those in December. Exciting times ahead!!! Hoping for more in the next week!

Baby Kayla and more
Hi, remember me? I used to post a blog a day over the summer. :)
So busy as of late! We're finally getting into a bit of a routine now. Maddy is still working on being okay with daycare. Monday and Tuesday of this past week she actually didn't cry at drop off...but then resumed the usual meltdown the rest of the week. We'll get there eventually...that's what I keep telling myself anyways.
Tommy has decided it's time to do some stuff. :) This week he started rolling around with intent to travel! He's still not trying to crawl or even get up on hands and knees, but we're happy with the progress he's making! Yesterday he started babbling for the first time!!!! SOOOOO thrilled to hear that (especially for an SLP mom)! He's been such a "baby" in the sense of needing so much care and attention for so long. It is so good to see him finally showing growth in these areas. --Especially considering he has his 9 month (I KNOW!??!) check up coming up in a couple of weeks. He will be 9 months this Friday. Nuts.
Lance has now received two interview offers! One is for a program in NC, the other in SC. Very exciting. More on that as it develops.
Last weekend, I went down to see my niece (I'm an aunt! I know this is obvious, but I had the epiphany long after the fact...lol). Kayla Grace Rapacz was born on August 26th at 8:08pm weighing 8lbs 10oz and was 21 in long.
My baby brother is a daddy :)
After a good feed and a bath, she fell asleep in my arms.
Aren't we, I mean, Isn't she adorable! ;o)

She's so little! It's crazy how quickly you forget how small babies are at first. She was 2 weeks, 2 days in this picture.

Kinda a big deal
I've been all Debbie Downer-ish the last two posts that I forgot to mention something I really did mean to both times. It's something monumental...TOMMY IS FINALLY SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT!!!! He first did so on the 24th of August--his 8 month birthday. I considered it his present to me. :) Since then, he's been pretty consistent. He goes down around 6:30 and wakes up around 6. There have been only a couple of nights where he either needed to be settled at 10 or woke up a tad early at 4. We are sooo excited about this. That's what makes Maddy's new nighttime junk so frustrating (although she did make through last night sans wake up). I guess the rule is that only one child at a time can sleep through the night??? ;o) Maddy had a good bedtime tonight, so hopefully that bodes well...I guess we'll see!
Below is a video of Maddy. She got this Fridge Phonics set from Uncle John for her birthday. When you put a letter in, it says a little thing for each letter (for example, "B says buh, B says Buh! Every letter makes a sound, B says buh!" Or, you can push a button and it sings the ABC song. Maddy likes to line up all the letters, play the song, and point to them as she goes. She doesn't get the right ones, but she tries! She knows some--M, D, R, Y, Z, and T to name a few.

Change
Oh and my. The past two weeks have been nuts. I am getting pretty settled in at work; things are going pretty well as far as that is concerned. I had some initial nutiness related to the status of things as they were left by my predecessor--and I'm sure there will be more things that emerge as time goes on--but I'm excited about the year and looking forward to be doing my thang again. ;o)
The kids. Ohhhh the kids. Daycare is going. Tommy is easy--by that, I mean, he is happy, doesn't cry, and good to go. Maddy still has her daily meltdown at drop off. Not fun. Maddy has already had a virus--had a soaring fever for two days last week which required me to stay home with her two days. Tommy is now the lucky owner of a nasty cold. Poor guy looks awful...but at least he can still go to daycare--I mean, he picked it up from someone else, right?
And then set against the backdrop of all this craziness is the plight of the 2-year old. There is no longer a magical forcefield that keeps Maddy in her bed. She has discovered (a few weeks ago) that if she wants to, she can just hop up out of her bed and open the door and leave her room. If it was just naptime I had to worry about, well, we could deal with that. However, she has started to wake up in the middle of the night crying for Lance or I to come lay down with her. We're still trying to figure out the best solution/response to that one. The same is true for naptime. I am doubtful about her actual napping at daycare because I can't get her to nap at home on the weekends. Needless to say, things have been rather challenging.
In other news, Lance has officially begun the process for residency applications. The central database opened up on the 1st. This means that his information (test scores, letters of recommendation, personal statement, etc) are available for the programs to see. We chose about 15 different programs, so we should start hearing from some of them soon. Crazy to think that we'll have some interviews scheduled before too long!
I tried to snap some pictures while I was home with the kids (I chose to keep Tommy home with Maddy when she was sick--I missed him!) last week.
Thursday 8/26. I'd noticed Maddy was warm/running a fever when I picked her up the day before. By this point the next day, her fever was 104.8 and we needed some supplies from Publix. This was the first time Tommy rode with her in the cart.
Friday 8/27. Maddy *LOVES* pushing Tommy around in the firetruck. Such serious faces, though! :)
Yesterday--I put Tommy in the container just because. :) He loves sitting around and playing with toys. Still not a fan of being on his tummy...
Today--my poor little guy. He is miserable. So sick. Eyes are all goopy and watery, nose is running goopy goodness, he is soo congested, and has a sad little cough. Thankfully, he's not running a fever. Despite all that, he's been in pretty good spirits. He's a trooper. It just breaks my heart to see him like this. Hopefully he doesn't get one bug after another...I hope this is just a big ol' nasty that will help his immune system get used to being in daycare. I guess we'll see.
